A post saying “I’m going to destroy Acme Corp” registers as negative sentiment in Meltwater. In a security context, it requires immediate triage as a potential threat. Marketing tools don’t distinguish between a negative product review and a threat of violence, because for marketing purposes, they’re both just “negative.”

Continuous collection across relevant platforms
Not just Twitter/X, Facebook, and Instagram. Effective monitoring covers Reddit, Telegram public channels, forums, blogs, image boards, and regional platforms relevant to your operating geography. Threats don’t restrict themselves to mainstream social media.
Collection must be continuous — not periodic keyword searches, but real-time ingestion of content matching your monitoring scope. A threat posted at 2 AM that isn’t surfaced until a morning report is intelligence that arrived too late.
AI classification trained on security scenarios
This is the critical differentiator. Keyword monitoring catches the obvious (“I’m going to bomb the building”). AI classification trained on security-specific scenarios catches the less obvious:
Escalating language patterns that indicate a person moving from grievance to action. References to specific locations combined with hostile intent. Coordination signals between multiple accounts targeting the same individual or organization. Coded language and euphemisms that keyword filters miss entirely.
The classification should map to specific risk domains — physical security, reputation risk, cyber indicators, crime risk — so alerts route to the right team with the right context.
Geo-fenced monitoring
Social media monitoring gains a spatial dimension when you can capture activity within a defined radius of a specific location. For facility security, this means monitoring posts originating near your corporate headquarters, data centers, executive residences, or event venues.

Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Using a marketing tool for security monitoring
Meltwater, Brandwatch, Talkwalker, and similar platforms are excellent at what they do. What they do is media monitoring for marketing and communications teams. They lack threat-specific classification, dark web integration, investigation tools, and security-oriented alerting. Repurposing them for security monitoring creates coverage gaps that matter in incidents.
Mistake 2: Keyword-only monitoring
Keywords catch what you predict. Threats often arrive in language you didn’t anticipate. A monitoring program that depends entirely on keyword rules will miss oblique threats, coded language, and context-dependent signals. AI classification supplements keyword monitoring by identifying threat patterns across content that doesn’t match any pre-defined keyword.
Mistake 3: Monitoring without response procedures
Collecting threat signals is step one. Responding to them is where security outcomes actually happen. Define who receives what alert categories, what the initial triage process looks like, and what escalation triggers exist. A social media threat against an executive should trigger a defined response — not a Slack thread asking “who handles this?”
Mistake 4: Treating social media in isolation
Social media threats rarely exist in a vacuum. The person posting escalating rhetoric on X may also be active on dark web forums, may have a data broker footprint exposing their targets’ personal information, and may be conducting domain reconnaissance. Step 1: Define your entity scope
Who and what are you monitoring for? Executives, board members, facilities, brand names, event venues, key personnel. This becomes your monitoring configuration.

What types of threats does your organization face? Map them to your platform’s classification taxonomy. Physical threats, workplace violence indicators, protest planning, executive targeting, brand attacks, coordinated campaigns, cyber threat indicators.
Step 3: Configure alerting workflows
